My recent work uses native and wild clays imbedded with collected granite, slate and feldspar to create both tea and tableware, as well as vases and sculptural forms.
The “Sierra Series” is taken from my love of the Sierra Nevada mountains. I spend many weeks a year in the high Sierra, and have been inspired the granite, the light, the rivers, trees and mountains. The “Sierra Series” cups, chawan, and other wares use clay and sand from the Sierra Foothills, and crushed granite and feldspar rock that I gather when in the mountains. All pieces are handbuilt and anagama fired. I hope that they bring a sense of the ruggedness and beauty of the Sierras.
Recent work uses clay from the Virginia Piedmont, both a high iron clay body and a kaolin.
